The house that starred in the 1979 film “The Amityville Horror” is up for grabs for very brave potential buyers. The current owners of the house are seeking $1.35 million for the colonial-style home in New Jersey. In the horror film, James Brolin and Margot Kidder play a couple who purchase a possessed home in Amityville, N.Y. Needless to say it wasn’t the white picket-fence dream they had hoped for.
But this is no dilapidated, ghostly mansion up for sale – the 10-room house at 18 Brooks Road in Toms River came onto the market last month, priced at $1.45 million, however the vendors have thus reduced their asking price.
Declaring the house not haunted, but in fact charming, the owners Odalys and Jose Fragoso bought the house in 2001. In 1981 the home was moved after filming wrapped and positioned directly on Brooks Road, rather than toward the corner of Brooks and Dock Street. External filming was not done at the house on Long Island, where a similar real-life story was supposed to have happened, but at the Brooks Road house, where a superstructure was built around portions of the home to make it look like the Amityville one.
The Long Island house at 112 Ocean Avenue where the original Amityville murders took place was listed for sale in 2010 for $1.15 million. The home was the actual site of the 1974 murders of six members of the DeFeo family who were shot and killed while they slept by the family’s eldest son. That home first sold for $55,000 shortly after the murders to the Lutz family who left after 28 days of being terrorized by spirits. Their story became the 1977 best-selling book by Jay Anson, followed by the Oscar-winning film franchise.
