A HAUNTING VISIT TO A MEDIEVAL ISLAND CHURCH - A Para-documentary

via GIPHY

In this edition, Chris Halton visits a beautiful 12th century church and cemetery that has on unconsecrated land, the grave of a pregnant 15 year old girl, with an iron cage allegedly to  `keep her locked away`..
Was she a witch, or the victim of bigotry?
Also, a historical tour of the church and a look at a famous writer who was the parish priest here.
Plus paranormal activity .....

FOOTSTEPS THROUGH TIME - NEW HAUNTED EARTH PARA-DOCUMENTARY

Here I decided to visit a very early Christian church dating back to the Saxon era, and one that apart from a fantastic history, is also regarded as quite haunted. This I was able to verify later in the day ....
Another para-documentary which shares the history - both written and spiritual, with events of para-normality caught on camera.

A compelling view, especially with regards to the paranormal activity captured that day.

As always, with your guide and presenter into the unknown, Chris Halton.

The video will be live at 10pm GMT (5pm EST)
this Friday, November 20th onwards.

A CHURCH HAUNTED IN TIME - NEW HAUNTED EARTH PARA-DOCUMENTARY

Recently, I visited a rather beautiful but historically interesting 11th century country church at Fairstead in Essex which was partly constructed using Roman re salvaged building material.
Many details from it`s medieval past are well preserved within, and that includes it`s permanent spectral residents who made their presence known with EVP and other events recorded to camera.

The church isn`t known for paranormal activity, but like many ancient church buildings over the centuries, this one has it`s fair share of unreported hauntings which on the day I was able to experience.

This documentary is part of a series of shows I`m shooting that I refer to as `para-documentaries`.
They are partly historical in context with an emphasis on the paranormal.
Most churches in the U.K are not accessible for night time paranormal investigations, so these documentaries attempt to redress that by my day time visits.

A NIGHT IN A HAUNTED WATCH OFFICE - HALLOWEEN SPECIAL FOR 2015

THIS SHOW WILL LINK LIVE FROM HERE AT 10pm (GMT) FRIDAY OCTOBER 30th

Here is our 2015 Halloween night investigation at haunted Coleby-Grange Watch Office (Air Traffic Control Tower) at the former WW2 RAF Coleby Grange airfield site. This building has a notorious record for hauntings, and we were in for a special surprise when we investigated it recently.

There was a considerable amount of video material shot, both by day in a site visit, and that of course which was shot for a night investigation.

From this material, some amazing activity was captured, not least the weirdly spectacular ghost lights from within the lower front office window as we were leaving. This material can be reviewed from an earlier post here:

GHOSTLY LIGHTS CAPTURED INSIDE AN ABANDONED HAUNTED WW2 AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER IN LINCOLNSHIRE

Without revealing too much of the investigation I can add that at least four paranormal events that the site is noted for were experienced on the night and were captured to camera.

On the `haunted scale`I would rate Coleby Grange Watch Tower as 7 out of 10 - 10 being the most active.

Join myself and fellow investigator, Alan Carter (who lives locally) as we investigate this very active abandoned site.

TOWER OF THE TEMPLARS - PARA/HISTORICAL DOCUMENTARY FROM HAUNTED EARTH

A journey into the distant past to the sole remaining preceptory tower of once a vast Knights Templar estate in rural Lincolnshire, England.

Join us,  as layers of history are peeled back to reveal the passing of time at the ancient Temple Bruer tower,  and it`s connection with King Henry VIII and the strange Dr D.G Oliver who claimed to have discovered human burnt offerings and live infant burials inside secret chambers and tunnels built long ago by the Templars.

Also some ghostly history, and a visit to another site in Essex connected to the Knights Hospitaller.
Added to that, more ghostly tales and some evidence of paranormality.

In short, a journey back to ancient days weaved delicately together in 30 minutes by your genial guide, Chris Halton.

GHOSTLY LIGHTS CAPTURED INSIDE AN ABANDONED HAUNTED WW2 AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER IN LINCOLNSHIRE

Coleby Grange Control Tower

Last night I shot an investigation at an abandoned and notably haunted WW2 Air Traffic Control Tower, or `Watch Room` at the former R.A.F Coleby Grange, in Lincolnshire with the assistance of Alan Carter a paranormal investigator based in that county.

Full details of that investigation will be shared at Halloween on Youtube.  Without giving too much detail away I can say that we interacted with some interesting activity which you will see.

However for now I can share with you all a very interesting paranormal event which occurred as we were leaving the premises close to midnight.

The weather conditions were atrocious, as it was frequently raining hard and blowing a strong gale.
Despite that, Alan and myself took a series of images from the outside to add to the photo album of that investigation to share later.

And here I think is probably the most convincing still images of paranormal activity there.
Historically the site (amongst other anomalies experienced) is noted for phantom lights appearing at the windows, and most notably from the upper floor (according to witnesses), but to date I have until now not seen any evidence of this event to support it.

So you can imagine our surprise when these mysterious lights appeared below the control room from a disused office.

When these were taken, there were no lights seen inside nor outside the building. In fact the possibility of any lights from within is quite impossible as any electrical wires or conduits for electricity were removed after the site was decommissioned in 1963.

But as you can see, there are lights, and importantly they are not in a fixed or static position (as in street lights, etc). As you follow through the sequence of shots you`ll note two points of interest.

1) I used a new method of night photography by setting the camera to shoot two images simultaneously with and without flash. It`s in the non-flash images that the lights appear stronger as they are not neutralised by the camera flash.

2) The lights are actually moving from frame to frame which suggests movement within the building.

Here are the sequence of images to see as we left the site to return to our car.

Rear side view of  building.

First front view of building showing darkened building.

Front view again, but no lights from the inside.

And here, still dark.

And again no lights under flash.

Can you see the light coming in from the left of this image?
A close-up of the light from the left.

The orbs are rain drops being blown by a strong gale - no signs of lights yet.

Note the two lights now in the left facing side window
A close-up from above.

With flash, the light`s brightness is diminished but they are present in the window.

Without flash they grow in intensity and appear to separate.
Another close-up as they start to move apart.

And separate even further but much brighter under flash.
And now the lights move further apart (close-up from above).

An inside view of the room from where the light came from

And from outside the affected window is left of this image

A close up of the window.

A view from the rear of the building across the fields. Note the large stacks of straw bales obscuring rear view.

I have yet to examine the video from two Sony Hi8 night shot camcorders and perhaps there lies within these tapes further evidence concerning the appearance of these strange light anomalies.
The investigation with a daytime visit will be available from my Youtube Haunted Earth page on Friday 30th October at 10pm GMT.

Please check regularly on my Facebook page for any new updates.

WEIRD PARANORMAL EVENT CAPTURED ON CCTV INSIDE HAUNTED HOME

Here is a short video which was kindly shared by Trevor Tye of Middlesbrough Paranormal.
In this video you`ll see orb activity just prior and after a chair swivels sharply around and 4 minutes disappears from the CCTV clock. This event was preceded by a very strange pixellation  appearing above the chair.

For your information. The video was captured directly onto the hard drive of the CCTV unit. In order for the original sharer to make a copy, he had to record directly from the screen with a hand held camera. There is no other way of getting a copy. This also eliminates any suggestion that the time phase variation has been altered on edit. If that was the case, it would be impossible to line up and join the clips without detection.

A very odd and indeed remarkable event captured inside a haunted house.
Many thanks to Trevor Tye.

HIGHLIGHTS OF A PARANORMAL INVESTIGATION AT HARWICH REDOUBT

Here is an edited highlight of an investigation I was invited to at Harwich Redoubt in June 2015 by the organisers, Ghostinspectres from Cambridge. To be honest,  it wasn`t an overtly hauntingly active evening, so I have focussed on activity captured in the cell block there which was interesting.
Overall, the company there was great, and in this video I have shared also some impressions from those partaking in the investigation. I do hope you enjoy :)

GHOSTLY CONTACT AT THE HAUNTED AIRFIELD - VIDEO

Here is a day visit inside the perpetually dark haunted airfield bunker which was the location for a recent presentation of haunted activity captured over 10 years at this location.
As we haven`t been back in a few years, this daytime visit procured an immediate reaction from the ghostly presence in residence, a former vagrant who lived there we have dubbed `Reg`.

Back inside the Haunted Bunker

In our time of investigating this site we have built a strong connection with this presence who seemed (excuse the pun) to be in good spirits on our return.

Over the years, Reg has produced some amazing activity which will be subject of our soon to be released DVD entitled, `Haunted Landscapes` which as a set covers some of our most productive locations and activities.
Release anticipated to be June 2015.
Hope you enjoy this brief `taster`.

PS: Forgive typo error on an AVP clip, erroneously marked as EVP. This will be corrected in the full DVD and clip you see today.

GHOSTLY TALES FROM GETTYSBURG BATTLE SITE

It is said that Gettysburg,  Pennsylvania, is America`s most haunted battlesite.

Certainly the battle scored one of the heaviest losses of life when  between 1–3 July 1863, there were over 27,000 Confederate and 31,000 Union losses. As the losing Confederate forces retreated, approximately 8,000 men and 3,000 horses were left rotting for the occupants of the area to bury, and many of the dead lay in graves scattered across the terrain of the battle site, and in some cases, the bodies still remain hidden where they fell beneath the debris of war and conflict.

Gradually, the majority were later re-interred at Gettysburg National Cemetery, but some still remain unseen and untouched since those fateful days in 1863.

Over the years that followed, many tales started to emerge of ghosts belonging to those dead men being seen on the battlefield site, and in period buildings still standing to this day.

These accounts were mostly residual hauntings, that is to say where the ghosts are actually a replay in time, and it is claimed that as the site lies across a bed of igneous volcanic granite, it is the quartz crystals in these rocks which retain the memory of these dreadful events.  Other accounts are of sentient ghostly soldiers actually reconnecting to the living by speaking or reacting to their presences - and particularly with regard to the many thousands of historic re-enactors that flood to the site to this day to recreate key events from the battle.

Here are some accounts from witnesses who lay claim to having seen apparitions at Gettysburg, or have interacted with them.

One re-enactor named Ray Hock claimed that he and another re-enactor were taking a break from a Gettysburg re-enactment when they were approached by what appeared to be another re-enactor. He claimed he was dressed in Union forces clothing, which looked to be real, and not reproduction. Hock says this man smelled heavily of sulphur and looked tired. The dishevelled figure approached the two men, asking them if it was a hard day. He then proceeded to give each man what appeared to be authentic live cartridges even though such rounds are banned on the battlefield today. The men looked at the round each in their hands and when they looked up the man was gone. There was no sign of him anywhere, as if he'd vanished into thin air. Hock took the cartridges to a university for examination and says they determined that the cartridges, right down to the minie ball and powder inside, were authentic to the Civil War.

Another account here that I quote as it was written. `Many years ago my friend and I made my first trip to Gettysburg. He had been there before. What happened one night still boggles my mind.
We were heading back to where we were camped at about 1015 at night. We walked by Servant's and noticed a light in the window of the house across the street. At that time, I did NOT know the story of John Reynold's sweetheart sitting with his body in that house.

We went across the street and looked in the window. There was the body of a man in a union general's uniform stretched out on a cot with a young woman sitting beside the cot in a chair reading a book by the lamplight. I thought wow, what a nice touch! We made a note to let Servant's know we liked the set up the next morning.

When we went back, the next day, the house was set up like a business and there was no way, they could have redone it over night. About 8 months later I was reading Mark Nesmith's latest book of the ghosts of Gettysburg, when I came upon the description of the scene we saw!! I about fell off my friends couch. My friend Linda said I got really pale and she thought that there was something wrong.
I told her what had happened. Later on my next trip over there, I got to talk to Mark and told him about it. He told me I wasn't the only one to see it, other people had experienced it too. There have been other experiences rather strange over there.`

Another account of a Gettysburg haunting occurred in the summer of 1993, when some re-enactors were together for the annual  Gettysburg battle re-enactments.  One evening, as they hiked along a creek called  `Bloody Run`, they came across a man laying in the bushes.  One of the men, a Richard Knapp described what he saw:

`He appeared to be a man laying there, but he wasn't solid like you and I are.  I mean, he was more of a hazy mist.  He was shivering 'cause it looked like he was in a lot of pain.  I couldn't go no further.  Emotionally, I broke down and cried.  I was shaking.  I had to actually have somebody come back and lead me out of the trail.`

One of the most haunted buildings connected with the battle also served as a field hospital, and campaign headquarters for the Confederacy. Today it`s called, Gettysburg College, but in 1863 it was known as Pennsylvania Hall which was constructed in 1837 and is often referred to as Old Dorm.

It has been said that on certain nights, students and staff members of the college have reported seeing the figures of soldiers pacing back and forth in the cupola of the building. The descriptions of the men vary but it is believed they may be sentries who were placed on duty there to guard the safety of General Lee, or to deliver messages to the battlefield.

Pennsylvania Hall
One student reported that he and his roommate, who lived in a dorm about 50 yards away from Pennsylvania Hall, saw a shadowy figure in the tower over a period of several nights. On another occasion, a figure was seen to be gesturing wildly, apparently to a student below. When the student called out to him, believing that perhaps someone was trapped in the tower, the figure vanished. An investigation by campus security found the building to be empty.

It is believed to be the terrible conditions of the field hospital however, which have left the strongest impressions on the building. According to the records of the time, blood sprayed the walls and floors of the rooms as doctors operated without anesthetic, dealing with bullet wounds by the preferred treatment of the time which was amputation. Outside of the operating rooms was an area where those who could not be saved were left to die.

Perhaps the most famous story connected to the time of the battle was related by author Mark Nesbitt. He told of two college administrators who were working on the fourth floor of the building one night. As they were leaving, they stepped into the elevator and punched the button for the first floor. Instead of taking them to their destination, the elevator mysteriously passed it and came to a stop on the basement level. The elevator doors then opened to a timeslip.

The basement storage room had vanished and in its place was the blood-splattered operating room of 1863. Wounded men were lying prone on the floor and administering to them were doctors and orderlies in bloody clothing. The entire scene was completely silent, although it was obvious that it was one of chaos.

Horrified by this residual event, the administrators repeatedly pushed at the elevator button, desperately trying to close the doors and escape the scene which lay before them. Just before the doors closed though, one of the spectral orderlies was said to have looked up, directly at the two administrators, as though asking them for help.

Whatever happened that evening, the two administrators were shaken and frightened by it and needless to say, never forgot their strange experience.

One notoriously haunted area on the battle site is a pile of boulders known today as, `Devils Den`. The site has a strategic military advantage, which was fought for many years before the arrival of the first Europeans by native tribes. This is largely bourne out by the fact that so many stone axe heads and arrows have been recovered from the locality.

During the battle, it was used by the Union and later the First Texas Regiment of the Confederacy for artillery and sniper riflemen. As with most parts of the battlesite, many men were killed here,  and it is their ghosts which predominate the alleged hauntings.

Here are a collection of haunted tales given by visitors to this area.

One afternoon in the early 1970’s, a woman was said to have visited the National Park Service information center to enquire about the possibility of ghosts being on the battlefield.

The visitor explained that she had been out on the battlefield that morning, photographing the scenery. She had stopped her car at the Devil’s Den and had got out to take some photos in the early morning light. The woman stated that she had walked into the field of smaller boulders, which are scattered in front of the Den itself and had paused to take a photo. Just as she raised the camera to her eye, she sensed the uncomfortable feeling of someone standing beside her. When she turned to look, she saw that a man had approached her.

She described this man as looking like a "hippie", with long, dirty hair, ragged clothing, a big floppy hat and noticeably, no shoes. The man looked at her and then simply said, "What you are looking for is over there," he said and pointed over behind her.
The woman turned her head to see just what the unkempt fellow was pointing at and when she turned around again, he had vanished. There was no trace of him anywhere.

A month or so later, the same ranger was on duty at the information desk when another photographer had come in and asked almost the same question. He too had been taking photos at the Devil’s Den, only this time, he had taken a photo about a month before in which the image of a man had appeared on the exposed frame a man who had not been there when the photo was allegedly taken.
The photographer described the man as looking like a "hippie"  and also mentioned his long hair, old clothing and the fact that he was barefoot.

Other visitors and Park Rangers have seen the apparitions of sharpshooters and have heard phantom sounds of gunshots and drum rolls coming from the wooded area of this locality.

It`s also claimed that other photographers have reported that their cameras refused to work,  and one, a paranormal investigator alleges that he called out to the rocks that he wanted to take some pictures for friends back home in Texas, and magically his equipment worked fine after that.

These are just a few of the many haunted tales from Gettysburg, but what of the actual evidence to back these claims up?

Certainly in respect of first hand accounts, there have been a number of contradictions to some, but not all of the stories told,  and it would be fair to say that some of the stories of the many events reported were nothing more than the re-telling of urban legends.

Interestingly, I can find no images from Devils Den of the alleged ragged soldier with long hair which seems to appear in many recollections of him being photographed.

There are of course many blurry and out of focus images on the internet which may or may not be construed as paranormal, but no evidence of clear full bodied apparitions.

I think it`s fair to say that quite a few amateur ghost hunters who have spent time and limited resources visiting the site have left with nothing and have clutched at explainable anomalies as paranormal,  or (in a few cases)  have either resorted to fabricating their own version or have accidentally filmed re-enactors who frequent the site regularly.

I believe that as many people do, that Gettysburg is an incredibly haunted site, but sadly the evidence that would prove some of the significant hauntings to be empirically proven is, I am sad to say,  lacking at the present time.

Here is one video of an alleged paranormal sighting caught on camera which as far as I am aware has not been evidentially debunked.

HAUNTED SHIP WRECKS

As followers or investigators of the paranormal, we are inevitably drawn to objects that we can access or see. But what of the innumerable reports of haunted shipwrecks lying from normal access beneath the salty sea?
Here are three of these wreck stories and the history - ghostly or otherwise which surrounds them.

ALKIMOS - A Haunted and Jinxed Wreck

History

A Greek-owned merchant ship which was wrecked on the coast north of Perth, Western Australia in 1963.

In March 1963, the struck a reef off the Western Australian coast. It towed to Fremantle, the port city for Perth, where it underwent repairs for two months. After settlement of a dispute concerning payment for the repairs, the Alkimos left Fremantle under tow by an ocean-going tug from Hong Kong.

Only a few hours out of port, the tow line gave way and the Alkimos was driven onto the shore. Although the ship remained intact, it could not be floated off at that time, and so it was filled with water to secure it in place and left in the charge of an on-board caretaker.
Another tug returned in January 1964 and the ship was refloated, but the planned journey to Manila had hardly begun when the tug was seized at sea by authorities and the Alkimos was left anchored. In May 1964, the vessel broke anchor and was driven onto the Eglinton Rocks near present-day Yanchep. On this occasion it was more severely damaged, and all thought of salvaging it intact was abandoned.

It was later sold by the owners for scrap. However, in 1969, salvage workers were driven off the wreck by a fire. One of the salvage workers also reported hearing ghostly noises. After that time, the partly dismantled remains of the ship sat in several metres of water, visible to visitors, but gradually disintegrating.

A Ghostly and Jinxed History

It`s alleged during it`s wartime construction in 1943 as a `liberty`ship,  that welders were sealed between hulls and their ghosts have haunted the vessel ever since.
Apparitions of a small dog were seen in the engine room during the ship's service and that a woman, working on board as a caretaker, suffered a severe fall leading her to give birth to a premature baby.
Other phenomena reported by salvage workers occupying the wreck, were allegedly footsteps heard on ladders and following workers around the vessel at night, cooking smells and noises emanating from the galley, and tools were reported to be moved by unseen hands.

There has been since an apparition of a human figure in rubber boots and oilskins (nicknamed "Henry"), who has been sighted on the wreck by various people including local cray fishermen.
The skull of Herbert Voight, a prominent long distance swimmer, was found near the wreck after he vanished in 1969, while attempting to swim between Cottesloe Beach and Rottnest Island, and the ship being bought and sold at least eight times while stranded, along with suggestions that purchasers suffered bad luck (such as bankruptcy and life-threatening illness).
A U.S Navy submariner by the name of Ted Snider was killed in a plane crash after assessing the wreck.

THE GHOSTS OF TRUK (CHUUK) LAGOON

History

During WW2, Japan utilised the circular coral reef in Micronesia as a port and airfield to help control their vast possessions scattered across the South Pacific from the Allies.

In 1944, Truk was devastated in one of the important naval attacks of the war.
After the American forces captured the Marshall Islands, they used them as a base from which to launch an early morning attack on February 17, 1944 against Truk Lagoon. Operation Hailstone (as it was named) lasted for three days, as American carrier-based planes sank twelve smaller Japanese warships (light cruisers, destroyers, and auxiliaries) and thirty-two merchant ships, while destroying 275 aircraft, mainly on the ground. The consequences of the attack made "Truk lagoon the biggest graveyard of ships in the world".

Ghostly History

In the years following WW2 the lagoon has proved popular for divers and WW2 historians as the wrecks were fully laden with aircraft and military vehicles, as well as tonnes of ammunition, supplies and other equipment.

During some of these dives, divers were startled to hear engines starting on a cargo/passenger ship, the  Fujikawa Maru including the sights of apparitions on this and other ships lying there.

One common report was the eerie sounds of truck engines on the sunken Hoki Maru ship.
This ship has a full cargo of trucks, and EVP with the sound of truck engines, “turning over and starting up” has been captured. At the time of this recording, there were no boat engines running on the surface.

Other divers have reported strange sounds coming from the shipwreck Fuji Kawamaru. They state when they have been near the engine room they have heard noises of machinery and grinding. Near this engine room is a pile of human remains.

THE TRAGEDY OF THE SS MOHEGAN

History

Mohegan sailed from Tilbury Docks at 2:30pm on 13 October 1898, under the command of the 42-year-old Captain Richard Griffith. She carried 57 passengers, 97 crew, seven cattlemen, and 1,286 tons of spirits, beer, and antimony. She arrived off Dover at 7:30 that evening, dropping her pilot. A report on the progress so far from the Assistant Engineer was probably landed at this time. A few minor leaks and electrical failures were reported but otherwise no major problems had been encountered.

Mohegan then reached her maximum speed as she sailed down the English Channel bound for New York. She kept close to the coast as she passed Cornwall, but took the wrong bearing. This was noticed by some of the officers and crew. They had noticed that the Eddystone Lighthouse was too far away and the coast too close. She neared the entrance of Falmouth Harbour and turned towards the entrance of the Helford River and on down The Lizard coast without slowing from 13 knots. This was noticed by the Coverack coastguard, which attempted to signal to her with warning rockets. The Mohegan either was unaware or took no notice, and maintained her course. James Hill, coxwain of the Porthoustock lifeboat saw the ship, lights ablaze, heading at full speed towards the Manacle Rocks. With a cry of 'She's coming right in!' he called his crew.

He was unable to avert disaster and the ship tore into the rocks. The ship rolled and sank 12 minutes later, with the loss of 106 lives. Captain Griffith, Assistant Engineer William Kinley and all of the officers went down with the ship. Only her funnel and four masts remained above water. The Porthoustock lifeboat Charlotte was launched in 30 minutes and rescued most of the survivors from the wreck and the water; 44 persons were saved.

Ghostly History

Since the disaster, the shipwreck is rumoured to be haunted.

Divers over the years who have visited the wreck report `electric shocks`when they have touched the wreck, and strange sounds which were described as being outside the normal sounds or noises you would hear under water.

GHOST CAUGHT ON THE LONDON UNDERGROUND

Here is a rather bland looking image shot on the London Underground of a fast approaching train on an empty platform at Queensway tube station, London.
As you can see the platform is empty, or is it?
This was shot recently at 11.30pm at night by a coach driver named Craig Cooper.
Craig was actually waiting outside the station with his coach when he went to the station to use the toilets. When he entered, he felt uncomfortable and especially on the platform that convinced him that someone was following .....
He took a photograph - presumably on his phone, and very faintly in the foreground you can see a figure with arms.

He quickly left the station after seeing this anomaly and later passed it to a friend, another coach driver called Trevor Tye who was kind enough to share it.

Before I share some more images to detail this apparition it is worth noting that the station has had quite a few suicides reported, and also a report in the 1980`s of a ghost seen on the platform waiting for a train.

If you look carefully, you can see that he/she is standing slightly sideways and forward, and there is a faint blur of a head. In a way, it almost looks like the apparition was posing for a photograph.

Here are some more images under different effects to try and enhance this image further.

Figure delineated in white

Quite who the ghost was in life, nobody can say. But if you are on this platform late at night on your own, you may not realise that you have the company of a lonely traveller.
