A GHOSTLY INVESTIGATION OF CRUMLIN ROAD GAOL, IRELAND - PARTS ONE & TWO

In early January 2018 I flew over to Belfast to join for the evening with Ghost Searchers Ireland (GSI) to investigate the former prison at Crumlin Road.

The prison (like most) has a tragic past, with women and children being imprisoned there from the early days, and later,  members of I.R.A and their mortal enemies, the UVF and UDF during the period known as `The Troubles`.

In its history, a total of 17 men were executed there for various crimes, and 15 of them still remain within the prison grounds in unconsecrated ground.

The prison has a history of abuse and suicides, the most poignant being the suicide of a 10-year-old boy named Patrick Magee, who hung himself following imprisonment by a court.

There are many recorded ghostly events reported within the prison which are detailed in the show, but what we experienced added a new dimension to that ghostly history which was verbal abuse never recorded before.

Even more weirdly, twice threats were made to kill me by these inmates and recorded as EVP.
It is believed that the reason they chose to be so vulgar in their comments was due to the fact that I am an Englishman who was formerly a police officer.

Historically, the Irish had every reason to fear outsiders and the police because of the tragic and inhumane treatment of them, and particularly during the 19th century when many died of starvation due to the `Potato Famine` when their crops were blighted and destroyed leaving the majority desperate for food. The British and the landowners of that time largely refused to help, and so many fled to the then colonies and the USA to escape starvation and death.

It is fair to point out that it wasn`t only the Irish who suffered at the hands of the British.
Many people from all over the UK lived in dire poverty and suffered heinous abuse at the hands of the then government.
But for the Irish,  the British (mostly wealthy and landed Scots and English) wanted to ethnically `cleanse` the country of the poor,  and to canvass public support magazines of the day portrayed them as savages more akin to being ape-like than human - as you can see from this image.

Following the Irish revolt when the majority of the country seceded from Britain,  it later led to the IRA committing more murders and ultimately, `The Troubles`, as Britain retained the northern part.

It is every credit that today the majority of the Irish - both North and South have buried the stirred enmities of the past, and the country as a whole enjoys a new era of peace and reconciliation with each other.

When I led this investigation I was completely mindful of its history and knew my presence was likely to stir up old animosities which resulted in some of the most amazing EVP ever being recorded there.

Here is a free preview of some of the events you will see in this two-part show.

In the below video I experience my first threat to kill me. I was referred to as a `Peeler` which is an archaic term for a police officer, and still used today.

In this feature, you`ll hear some amazing Class A EVP, and some extremely coarse language which clearly showed their displeasure at me being there.

And in this final `taster` clip, we recorded Class A EVP of a man speaking a tongue which we assumed was Gaelic, but Irish language speakers have declared it to be not Irish, but unknown.

As you can appreciate this is possibly one of the very best investigations to date.
And you can see this show Friday night (January 19th, 2018)  at 10 pm (UK time) when I will post a link to this page for you to view part one.

My special thanks to Gary Watters and his excellent team at Ghost Searchers Ireland for inviting me over to work with them.

THE LEGEND OF BORLEY RECTORY & CHURCH - A para-documentary

In any investigation, the testimony of witnesses is key to deciding whether accounts given by them stand up to scrutiny. And the Borley Rectory story of alleged paranormality is one of them.
In terms of hard verifiable evidence, there is very little, if hardly any at all.

So the course of events from Borley`s inception to it`s later destruction rests largely on Harry Price  the incumbent clergy, and also the families and staff who lived and worked there.
This documentary attempts to place Borley into a clearer perspective by analysing these accounts and the character of those involved.

Certainly, by the time the Daily Mirror became involved, the rectory was well known locally for reported activity, and there cannot be any doubt that the rectory was spiritually active, but ..... by how much?

Throughout it`s life, the hauntings were always variable according to whoever the witnessed them. By the time of the Foysters, they seemingly reached a crescendo of activity.

I hope you enjoy this presentation as I attempt to draw some balance in the entire rectory story by focussing on the main actors, and looking more in depth at their characters and honesty.

In my mind, this is far more compelling than simple witness accounts.

I also return to the hauntings at Borley church, which not only has many reports of activity both within and outside the church, but also has some evidence provided by a paranormal investigation in the 1970`s.

Was it the most haunted house. Or was it merely an opportunity for fame and fortune?
Here all is revealed from facts surrounding this most infamous of cases.

A HAUNTING AT BACHELOR`S GROVE - PURPORTEDLY THE WORLD'S MOST HAUNTED CEMETERY

In October 2017 while in Chicago for the para-con, I visited in company with Cheryl Lynn Carter and Melissa De Santis, the cemetery and woods at Bachelor's Grove, Midlothian, Illinois.

Reputedly the world`s most haunted cemetery, it certainly lived up to it`s reputation with a series of amazing events which included - EVP, strange smells, and the sounds of a woodman splitting logs and musket fire from the woods being recorded to camcorder.
A very intense investigation, and one I hope you will all enjoy.

This show will be viewable from the second link at 10pm (UK time) today, Saturday October 21st 2017.

A VISIT TO A VERY HAUNTED NAPOLEONIC ERA FORT

Early in June 2017, and just prior to my jaunt to the Adriatic to visit Venice and Poveglia with my American friend Mark Painter, we visited Harwich Redoubt Fort, in Harwich, Essex.  A town famous in history for it`s connections to The Mayflower.
The Redoubt was built as a harbour defence for a possible invasion by the French during the Napoleonic era.
The fact that it exists today is down to the volunteer labour from the people of Harwich who stepped in to help restore it.
During the restoration, they even discovered a huge Victorian cannon which had been dumped in the moat.
Anyway, our visit was to tap into the presences there, and we were not unrewarded despite the dreadful weather conditions outside!

GHOSTLY ENCOUNTERS AT AN ANCIENT CASTLE RUIN

In this show, I attend Baconsthorpe Castle in Norfolk with Eddie Mallett to investigate the inner and outer gatehouse. The site traditionally is active with light anomalies, some of which were caught there three years ago on a similar investigation. On this occasion some EVP was captured by both Eddie and myself, and a fantastic light anomaly was caught on cam by Eddie in an empty castle room. This is a beautiful site with a great history and I hope you`ll enjoy this visit as much as us.

GHOSTLY ENCOUNTERS WITH A RELUCTANT SPIRIT- FULL P-SB7 SESSION

This time I visit a church cemetery dating back to the 11th century during twilight to see whether or not spirit wanted to communicate.
This was very unusual in as much as spirit knew who I was, and later, a presence repeated three times the same question.
Quite an interesting journey out into the countryside, and the last `ghost box` shoot before filming soon a new para-documentary.
I hope you enjoy :)

A RETURN TO THE HAUNTED BUNKER - FULL P-SB7 `GHOST BOX` SESSION

In this edition, I return once more to the scene of over five years solid investigation which is the former WW2 bunker at Rivenhall, Essex.
I could write a book on the activity recorded there, but instead I will share this earlier show which collates much of these paranormal events.

Joining me on this visit is Andy Radley, a fellow paranormal investigator and WW2 enthusiast.
Andy decided to wear his USAAF Captain`s uniform to draw through activity relevant to that period.
And by utilising a P-SB7 `ghost box` - which I have never used here previously, it was evident that the presences were not too happy as you will see and hear.
The bunker was a place that helped much into my research of haunted places as I was able to measure and quantify activity. This is an opportunity that you seldom get at other locations.
I hope as always that you enjoy this show and will share to friends and colleagues.
The show will start at 10pm (GMT) tonight, Tuesday 11th April, 2017 when the link below comes active.
Until then, enjoy the earlier video. It is very enlightening.

GHOSTLY MANIFESTATION CAPTURED IN THE WHITE HOUSE OVAL OFFICE?

From this recent publicity shot issued by the White House there can be seen two light anomalies above and in front of President Trump, with a further form over the doorway.
The image has been examined for light reflection on the lens, smears, or other explainable causes.
The shot was carefully taken to avoid light glare, and a smudge would leave a blurred area over the photograph. And smoking is highly unlikely as President Trump is a non-smoker.
The light form looks to be a genuine haunting with someone in spirit looking over the conversation.

Here is a report on White House hauntings: HAUNTED WHITE HOUSE

I find this image to be fascinating and compellable evidence of a haunting.

THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE `WHITE LADY GHOST` - A Para-documentary

On a hot day in August 1975, a Diane Berthelot who was feeling particularly unwell visited with her husband and young son, St Mary Church in the village of Worstead, Norfolk.

While there she sat alone on a pew when her husband took a series of photographs which included one still of her sat down.

Afterwards she apparently felt much better and her health improved after they returned home to Essex.

A while later the images of that day were developed and printed when it was noticed that there was a strange light anomaly behind Diane in the church. The anomaly appears human in form, and some claim that it appears to be wearing an old fashioned hat. People from the village were aware of the legend of the `White Lady`, who apparently possessed curative powers, which they ascribed to helping Diane.

The last known occurrence connected to the legend of the `White Lady` happened many years earlier, in fact during the 1830`s when a guest staying at a local hostelry heard that the `White Lady` appeared in the church every Christmas Eve.

Determined to prove this to be nonsense he decided to climb up into the belfry on Christmas Eve so he could look out for the ghost - should it appear.
He was later discovered in a terrible fright and claimed he had seen her before dying on the spot.
After that, nothing was heard further on this apparition until Diane and her family paid the church a visit.

Critics have argued that the apparition was merely strong sunlight reflecting off someone sat behind Diane. This has been utterly repudiated by the Berthelot family although from looking closely at the image there does seem to appear below the apparition a dark pair of legs with shoes.

However, the legend of the `White Lady` has endured, and many people visit the church in the hope that they might receive some beneficial healing from the presence of this spirit.

During my visit there to film and open up spiritually, I was suffering from a back pain near to my left kidney which has a stone awaiting removal. Can I say I was cured?
That is a difficult question to answer as I clearly felt much better while there, but the pain soon re-appeared after I returned home.

Regardless, I managed to capture some odd E.V.P, and even saw a black shadow drift across the front of the church`s organ.

I hope you enjoy this visit and my impressions gained from being there, which is a beautiful 14th century church with 16th century additions.

THE WELLSTEAD INCIDENT - A GHOST STORY By Chris Halton

THE WELLSTEAD INCIDENT (c) 2017 - By Chris Halton

Having spent 30 years as a police officer, and dealing with situations that varied from serious crime such as murder, to ordinary domestic related incidents, I was well versed in all that was deemed bad or good in human character.
Indeed such was the temper and tone of my life I was perhaps entwined with the stress and the excitement that came part of that very existence which was what I perceived to be the pure essence of life and death.
And so retirement from all of this became a cut-off point from all that I knew to be normal to my life, and adopting a more sedentary life style was something for which I was ill-accustomed for and wanted.
For some months I decided to follow the same well beaten path of my colleagues in retirement by becoming a private detective, which I had hoped, would allow my well trained legal and investigative faculties to be put at least to some good use.
Despite advertisements in the back pages of local newspapers and circulars, the request for my services appeared more in the vein of following errant husbands or wives in domestic infidelity cases, or chasing debtors for unpaid debts.
In the main these offered little chance for excitement or opportunity to perform a task that well suited my detective skills for which I may be boastful to say that on three past occasions I received a Chief Constables Commendation, and two commendations from judges at court for jobs well done.
This dissatisfaction of not having any real and tangible purpose often left me lingering for the earlier life I enjoyed, and the thought of spending the remainder of my days performing these very humdrum tasks left me feeling somewhat disconsolate with my very being and future.
However, that all was to change on the day of November 10th this year, when I received a telephone call request from a Lady Fitzwilliam, the wife of a businessman of note to call at her home to deal as she briefly said, `with a most pressing and urgent matter that required the greatest discretion.`
Following her instructions, I was directed to contact her personally at her home, Wellstead Hall, near the town of Sudbury in Suffolk.
Arriving at 2.30pm that day, and on a very dull and overcast afternoon, the weather cast a deep gloom over the hall having negotiated a mile long drive to get there.
The house appeared to be a very old timber framed property of great antiquity, with part of the house constructed of a soft mellow sandstone that appeared in part to be the remains of a former monastic building for which the timbered structure had been added later.
Standing a few yards east side of the house I noted the ruins of what appeared to be a chapel of some note which gave the whole site an eerie, if not sombre presence.
Indeed if the house was observed on a more agreeable day, it would look truly magnificent imbued with the history of years long lost in time, but here I digress.
Leaving my car in the curved carriage drive in front of the building, I gathered my case and hat and made my way quickly to a large oaken front door which was from memory painted black with a large brass lions head door knocker.
Lifting the heavy door ring I tapped twice against the back plate from which resonated a loud and almost thunderous echo into the property.
Presently I heard the shuffling of feet, and a voice of a man shout, “Be with you in a moment”.
Within seconds the door creaked open, and standing in front of me was a grey haired, apron wearing gentleman, who was resplendent in a shirt, collar, and tie, and who introduced himself as `her ladyship's valet`; and appeared to be cleaning the inside of the property judging by a rather grubby duster in his rubber gloved hand.
Without further introduction from me, he ushered me into a large hall, which were framed by oil paintings and two fine mahogany hall porter chairs.
With a brief smile he beckoned me to follow into an open door from the hallway into a large heavily beamed drawing room where a slim, well dressed middle-aged woman was sat in a large winged armchair by an open hearth log fire.
She stood to her feet, and smiled and said, “My name is June Fitzwilliam, and you must be the detective I asked to see, named Mr Alshott. Oh, and no formalities here, please call me June, and your first name is?”
“Oh, I`m Derek, pleased to make your acquaintance”, as I outstretched my hand and shook hers.
Having been requested to sit down in the opposite winged chair, Lady Fitzwilliam stared directly into the flames of a rather handsome stone fireplace which was suitably fitted with a large fire dog grate piled with burning logs.
She seemed as though she was mesmerised by the flickering lights curling from the spitting, split wood , and after this momentary distraction she turned to me and said, “So pleased you got here, I`ve been at my wits end over this, let me explain”.
After having been offered and accepted the gentile comforts of an afternoon tea with June and served by her valet, she related to me the following story which I will share here in the main without the necessities of speech quotations.
Some twenty years earlier, June and her husband Sir Angus Fitzwilliam bought the rambling and run down hall from the estate of the former owner, an hereditary peer, Lord Wellstead who died without issue aged 92.
The Wellstead`s had owned the property since the dissolution of the Catholic church in the 16th century. The house was originally the property of a Cluniac order of monks who were forced off the estate in 1536, and much of the original buildings were demolished and sold for building material. By the time the Wellstead`s arrived, all that remained were the partial remains of the refectory and the adjacent ruined medieval chapel. The timber framed extension was added by the Wellstead`s.
I interjected, “A fascinating history, but how is this relevant to my being here, June?”
Looking at me rather curtly she said, “Everything, Derek, if you allow me to continue”.....
She then drew a deep breath and continued, “Do you believe in ghosts, Derek? I can understand completely if you don`t, but I really don`t know how to describe the events over the last few days.”
I replied that although I didn't personally believe, I was at least open minded to the possibility and experience of such an event.
“Well” she added, looking somewhat relieved, “Three nights ago it started. That is to say, three nights ago at 11pm I was sat in this room reading. I heard the door knocker, but as Charles had already retired for the night, I went alone to answer. Upon opening, there was no trace of anyone being there. As there was a breeze I assumed that perhaps it may have been that which caused it. But to be honest, in all the years I`ve lived there it has never happened before. But one has to be reasonable and logical about such matters, so I put it all down to that.”
Stopping briefly to sip her favourite Earl Grey tea from an elegant Minton breakfast cup and saucer, she added, “The following night, I was again here in this room at the same time when the door knocker went again. Just one loud rap. At this time Charles was in the kitchen and he went to answer the door. Again there was nobody there and no wind or breeze this time. Charles went outside with a torch and thought he saw someone walking into the church ruins next door. But again nobody was found. On both occasions I informed the police, but by the time they arrived, whoever, or whatever called at my home had obviously long gone by then. Last night was even more stranger than the last. Charles was with me again in this room in case the mystery caller arrived at the same time.
Sure enough the door knocker was rapped, and we rushed straight to the door. This time I too saw someone or something heading to the ruins, but as it was raining hard I wasn't able to see who it was. All I can say is that it looked by the size and height to be a man. Again the police were called and the grounds and ruins were searched, but nothing, nothing at all.”
She paused and then said, “And here is why it was even stranger still. When it rains, callers arriving on foot at the door leave wet footprints as the ground there is dry due to the porch. And yet there were none! And when the police called their footprints were quite self-evident in the rain after they had left.”
She then got up and took from the mantelpiece and said, “This morning in the post I received this card from my husband sent a few days ago stating that he was hopeful of returning tonight. The card was depicting Monaco in the south of the country, and I knew he would probably sail to return via Marseilles as he hates flying. But knowing the troubling weather we've been experiencing over the last few days I realise that there was no guarantee of him getting here in time. So I`ve called you in to help”.
And with a soft but hesitant smile, she continued; “Well if you could, and I will reward you handsomely for your trouble.”
“Well, I am more than happy to assist, but why not call in the police again?” I answered.
She pointed out that each time the police responded it was at least half an hour after the event, and so to resolve this, she wanted me to sit up outside in my car to catch the caller as he arrives. She added that should her husband return in time he would join me.
Having agreed a fee for my troubles, I arranged with her to return at 10pm that evening, and would remain hidden from view in my car on the driveway. Hopefully then this mystery could be explained.
Later that evening I returned as agreed and parked my car to afford a discreet view of the front of the house which was poorly illuminated as there was no outside lighting, and just the minimal light from the corners of the curtains downstairs. Fortunately though it was close to a full moon and there were no clouds in the night sky.
After calling first at the house, I returned to my car and remained partially hidden from view in the back seat.
After what seemed an eternity, (but in fact was no more than an hour), I saw a solitary figure of a man walk to the front door and knock once. I immediately opened the rear door and clambered out, but the man had gone. The best I could describe was a short stockily built man wearing a raincoat with a belt.
I went to the spot where I saw him, and looked in either direction. He was nowhere in view that I could see, and so I stood quietly still hoping that I may hear something of his presence. In the far distance and towards the old chapel ruins I heard very faintly the sound of someone walking, but saw no light of a flashlight or similar.
Certain that this was indeed the mysterious caller, I quietly, but as quickly possible, walked to where he was heading and just barely discernible in the gloom I saw him enter the main chancel of the ruined building.
I headed over to him and nervously challenged him as he stood with his back to me and said, “What are you doing here may I ask, this is private property?”
He turned around slowly and stood facing towards me by a few feet as I shone the light into his face. He raised his arms and snapped, “You can put that light away from me, I'm the owner of this property, so who the hell do you think you are?”
I could see that the man was Sir Angus Fitzwilliam , judging by the large framed photograph I had seen inside the house. I quickly apologised, and feeling more relaxed I explained why I was here.
He smiled reassuringly and said, “Oh, I perfectly understand, poor June does get rather jittery when I am away.”
He explained he had just returned from his trip abroad, and thought he had seen someone among the ruins and went to investigate.
He added that he liked to wander on his own to the ruins to appreciate the quietness and tranquility, especially after being away on a hectic business schedule. He claimed the place was haunted and asked whether I believe in ghosts.
I told him what I told his wife, that I am open minded on such matters although I personally have never seen a ghost. He laughed, and said, “Well sometimes we may meet a ghost and never know it”.
He struck me as a kindly and congenial character, and we sat down on a ruined stone wall where he spoke about his life and hopes for the future. He offered me a cigarette during our conversation from a silver cigarette case that his wife had bought him on their wedding anniversary, and told me how much comfort the case gave him when he was away from his beloved wife. He then strangely became quieter and more sullen at the mention of June, and said that he needed to be alone now for a short while, and asked that I go to the house to assure his wife that he was safe and had now returned.
Shaking hands with him, I went as requested to the house and explained to June that her husband had now returned home, and would be returning shortly after visiting the old ruins.
She was visibly quite excited and pleased that he had come back safely, and asked her valet to prepare some sandwiches for both him and myself.
We had both barely sat down when the door rapped again. She laughed and said, “Oh this time I know who that will be”, and rushed to open the door.
Instead of her husband, stood at the doorway was a rather glum looking police officer who asked that he may be permitted to come inside.
Thinking that this had everything to do with her intruder, she beckoned him into the lounge and asked that he sit down.
Still looking very serious and perhaps embarrassed, the police officer said, “I think I had better stand Lady Fitzwilliam. I have been asked at this late hour to deliver a telegram to inform you that your husband had died in France four night's ago from a heart attack following a heavy business meeti....` Before he could finish, June frantically turned to me and said, “But you told me you have just spoken to him, what`s going on here, where is Angus?”
I was momentarily in a state of shock myself upon hearing the news, and mumbled briefly and incoherently before I could spit out the sentence that confirmed unequivocally that I had indeed just spoken to him inside the church ruins. I assured all parties present that this was the case and that he had said he would return shortly.
At June's insistence we left the house with the officer and went to the ruins where I had last seen him. And indeed he was nowhere to be found. But resting on the wall where we were both earlier sat was a silver cigarette case, the very case from which Sir Angus had earlier offered me a cigarette.
I picked this up and gave it to June as she seemed visibly shocked to see it. Very nervously she fumbled to open the lid clasp which revealed within an engraving bearing the words, `To my dearest Angus, love June`.
She then burst into tears and was inconsolable with grief, but found the strength to ask the police officer, "Please tell me, what time did Angus die, does it say?"
Looking back at the telegram the officer replied, “Why, it says, 11pm”.
I realised that I had shared the late hour of the night alone in an old church ruin with what I could sanely describe as a ghost, and a ghost of a man who had desperately tried to return to his own home for four nights. And sadly perhaps for June, she never saw him again except at his funeral a few days later.
He never called again at the house, although immediately after the funeral I did share with her the conversation I had shared with him, and for that at least she was at peace again.
Even to this day, I often query with myself all of the events that happened, yet I still find it difficult to believe a person could exist in spirit and still be able to return in solid form. I guess that's why people call this the paranormal, and more importantly, the power of love.

A HAUNTED EXPERIENCE AT THE CONGRESS PLAZA HOTEL - HALLOWEEN 2016

Chris Halton in old Chicago.
Here is a video from my stay at the haunted Congress Plaza Hotel, Chicago, USA.

As you will see, I picked up quite a bit of activity in the area of my hotel room door and adjacent corridor. And as a bonus, the riddle of missing room, 666.

The Congress Hotel is regarded as one of the most paranormally active hotels in the world with ample evidence of material gathered by investigators. In fact, the movie, `1408` starring John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson was based on that building.

The link below will be `live`at 10pm (GMT) - 4pm (CDT) FRIDAY OCTOBER 28 2016.

Hope you enjoy and Happy Halloween Hauntings!

MURDER AT THE RED BARN - NEW PARA-DOCUMENTARY

Here is my para-documentary on a very high profile case in late Regency England whereby a local daughter of a mole catcher in Polstead, Suffolk (Maria Marten)  has an affair with a young squire with devastating results. Her lover, William Corder subsequently murders her, and buries her body inside the Red Barn, and moves to London to later marry an affluent woman.

Maria`s body is discovered following alleged psychic dreams by her step-mother, and Corder is arrested, found guilty, and executed. What follows is even more interesting as his body is dissected, and his skin used to bind a book of the crime. His skeleton was given to West Suffolk hospital, to be used for anatomical training for nurses and doctors.

Even weirder was that his skull was removed years later from his skeleton, and Corder`s ghost appeared at the thief's home to demand its return!

I am especially indebted to the author and historical criminologist, Stewart Evans who acted as a consultant on the documentary, and assisted further by appearing in this programme and even sharing with me archive material which appears throughout.

I am also grateful to Alex McWhirter of Moyse`s Hall museum, Bury St Edmunds for allowing access to exhibits from the Corder trial and also appearing on screen to talk about them.

One of the most fascinating accounts I have come across for a long time, and related to camera for your interest and enjoyment.

THIS SHOW WILL BE LIVE FROM 10pm (GMT) on SUNDAY 10th JULY 2016 FROM THE LINK BELOW:

THE HAUNTING AT POTSFORD GIBBET - A TALE OF MURDER, EXECUTION & AN ACTIVE GHOSTLY PRESENCE

In the year 1698, a double axe murder took place at Letheringham water mill in the county of Suffolk,  England. The victims John Bullard senior and junior, were left hog tied to a beam in the mill after being butchered by an axe.

Chris Halton standing at the gibbet
The killer, a disconsolate temporary worker named as Jonah Snell was later found wandering and still in possession of the blood stained murder weapon.

He was detained and appeared at West Wickham Sessions Court the following year where he was judged guilty of both murders. No submissions were recorded by Snell which may have given an account as to why he chose to commit this terrible crime.

His punishment was to be hung by the neck, and for his body to be incarcerated in a gibbet at nearby Potsford, which was then a busy road, but now standing on the edge of a wood along a country footpath. His remains were left in chains until the year 1740 whereby they were taken down and finally buried nearby.

Today the remains of the gibbet post are preserved for posterity, and the site has gained a notorious reputation for haunting`s - both day and night.

The earliest sighting of Jonah Snell`s ghost occurred just prior to his remains being removed, and since then many people have experienced the presence of a paranormal entity over the centuries.
This may be a physical manifestation or by an unknown presence grabbing or touching people when they least expect it.

The site has been investigated many times with investigators experiencing some of the events recorded there.

In this show, the legend of Snell is examined in detail, and is followed by a night investigation at the gibbet.

The show will be linked from this page at 10pm (GMT), Friday February 5th 2016 where it can be viewed.

Below is a trailer for the show:

HIGHLIGHTS OF A PARANORMAL INVESTIGATION AT HARWICH REDOUBT

Here is an edited highlight of an investigation I was invited to at Harwich Redoubt in June 2015 by the organisers, Ghostinspectres from Cambridge. To be honest,  it wasn`t an overtly hauntingly active evening, so I have focussed on activity captured in the cell block there which was interesting.
Overall, the company there was great, and in this video I have shared also some impressions from those partaking in the investigation. I do hope you enjoy :)

GHOST CAUGHT ON THE LONDON UNDERGROUND

Here is a rather bland looking image shot on the London Underground of a fast approaching train on an empty platform at Queensway tube station, London.
As you can see the platform is empty, or is it?
This was shot recently at 11.30pm at night by a coach driver named Craig Cooper.
Craig was actually waiting outside the station with his coach when he went to the station to use the toilets. When he entered, he felt uncomfortable and especially on the platform that convinced him that someone was following .....
He took a photograph - presumably on his phone, and very faintly in the foreground you can see a figure with arms.

He quickly left the station after seeing this anomaly and later passed it to a friend, another coach driver called Trevor Tye who was kind enough to share it.

Before I share some more images to detail this apparition it is worth noting that the station has had quite a few suicides reported, and also a report in the 1980`s of a ghost seen on the platform waiting for a train.

If you look carefully, you can see that he/she is standing slightly sideways and forward, and there is a faint blur of a head. In a way, it almost looks like the apparition was posing for a photograph.

Here are some more images under different effects to try and enhance this image further.

Figure delineated in white

Quite who the ghost was in life, nobody can say. But if you are on this platform late at night on your own, you may not realise that you have the company of a lonely traveller.

FISHERMEN SPOOKED AT HAUNTED ESSEX LAKE

Gosfield Place - Circa 1811

The below story and other accounts were discovered at diverse internet sites on researching the ghostly history of a now overgrown former country park which was created as an ornamental folly at the now demolished estate of Gosfield Place.

Before I share the ghostly account, here is some history.

The park was designed by Humphry Repton in 1811. Gosfield Place, the seat of the Sparrow family, was built as a Georgian classical house in 1800 then rebuilt in 1865 as a larger French influenced house. It was demolished 1924-5.

Gosfield Place - As re-built in 1865 and demolished 1924-25

All that remains today is the lake and an ornamental baroque style bridge which was constructed in 1865, and despite surviving with some missing ornamental metal panels it is regarded as a rarity of it`s type and is listed as a protected historical structure.

The surviving bridge from 1865
The account:

`Around 15 years ago I was carp fishing a local estate lake called (deleted) with two friends. There were many rumours surrounding the old estate and the hall that once stood on the hill overlooking the lake.

All that remained were the foundations and a large ornate iron bridge that crosses one end of the lake to the driveway and the road situated about half a mile away. The lake was and still is typical of many estate lakes, shallow, big lily beds, boggy around the margins, surrounded by big old gnarled trees and extremely broody.

The lake today - overgrown and neglected
Even during the day it possessed an atmosphere that could only be described as heavy. Often when fishing there a strange sensation would fall upon the place sending shivers down the spine and making you to want to keep looking behind you. Even the birds and water fowl would suddenly go silent and any breeze rippling the surface would fall still.

Rarely did anyone fish there alone, they couldn't explain why, just never did. To fish there was at night was never heard of that is why when we decided to do so we went as a threesome, considering that two of us would not be enough if something happened.

Arriving at around 8pm it gave us enough time to set up before darkness fell at 9.30.
I choose to fish from the centre of the old dam wall, Ted sixty yards to my left in the corner with Len around a hundred yards to my right on the field bank. It was agreed that we would fish until around 1am and depending on results either pack in or continue until breakfast time.

By the time the sun had dipped behind the hill our baits were in position and we sat back to enjoy our first cup of tea and smoke of the session. It was a nice warm evening and everything was right with the world even the fish looked like they may feed as they mooched in and out of the lily beds and sending up huge frothy bubbles from the silty lake bed.

As darkness begun to fall a little light but cold breeze sprang up from no where, just chilly enough to make you lift the collar of your shirt and shrug the shoulders. Even more strange was that it seemed to come from a dense wooded area which kissed the edge of the lake and ran back up the hill to where the hall once stood.

By 11pm it was pitch black and glancing to my right I could see by the glow of Len's roll up (hand rolled cigarette) that he was making his way towards me. "Not much happening round there" he said as he arrived at my side "I'll try off the dam too" "so will I" said Ted who had arrived at my other side.

There we sat for the next hour just 25 yards apart with nothing happening on the fishing front. Filling the kettle and lighting the stove culminated in a take on my right hand rod and the strike was meet with a heavy, slow moving and as yet unseen force.

Rising to my feet to apply some side strain I felt the uncontrollable urge to look around whilst at the same time a loud splash rang out across the lake as a big fish leapt clear of the water, the rod arched over and the clutch gave line, then all fell slack whatever it was probably a large carp had come adrift.

By now my companions stood beside me and as we discussed what had happened we became aware of a great presence descending around us. Hard to describe it just felt heavy, dark and very sad.
Now the three of us were well seasoned anglers spending much of our time fishing after dark, often alone. This was something else, something we had never experienced before or since, thank god. "I think I'll call it a night" I said "feels like a storm coming" the others agreed and said we would stop for a pint on the way home, then it happened.

From out of nowhere a scream rang out, a scream so loud that you couldn't think straight, we froze to the spot and reached for our torches, they didn't work, three torches and not a glimmer between them.

The scream turned to a wail still loud and one long note drowning our voices as we tried to speak. We knew what each other were saying and within a minute all tackle was retrieved, line bitten through, stuff just grabbed as we stumbled our way along the field bank towards the iron bridge. the old driveway and the sanctuary of the car.

The wail followed our every footstep growing neither louder or quieter, Ted was the first to reach the bridge and as he set foot on it all fell silent, very silent, painfully silent. I reached for my torch and yes it worked, so did the others, we looked at each other in disbelief but dared not utter a word, what could be said? And if we spoke would the screaming start again, no we just looked then continued on the long walk to the car.

How many times I looked over my shoulder, I would be guessing but it was a lot and the same went for the other two. We didn't stop at the pub and drove home in silence, in fact it was more than a week before we spoke about it and then only for a minute.

Last July was the first time I returned to the lake. not to fish you understand just for a look, Sarah was with me and upon seeing the lake she said that she didn't want to fish there nor even walk around it. She knew nothing of what had happened but she sensed all was not well for even during a sunny July afternoon there lay a strong presence and an atmosphere that all was not well.`

Further accounts were discovered of fishermen `driven off` at night by a bad presence, and one account of a wailing voice. Even during the day people have occasionally felt uncomfortable, which could be a feeling of the sheer neglected despondency of the site. One felt that `eyes` were looking from the nearby woods, which I can concur with a visit there a number of years ago. Although on my second visit it just felt benign.

Whether these are merely `tall tales`, or even a fox wailing at night, there are more than one account of this forgotten corner of Essex.

Today the lake is being overtaken by invasive weed, and part of the lake area is given over to a gun club with warning notices posted.

Whatever tragedy befell this area is not known, but an ominous shadow of the past pervades over the lake and it`s borders.

A DAYTIME ROADSIDE HAUNTING WITNESSED BY TWO SEPARATE MOTORISTS ON TWO SEPARATE DATES

Bretby Hall

It is seldom that in the studies of the paranormal that you find two unrelated witnesses to the appearance of an apparition at a location not noted for haunting, and perhaps more significantly, a ghost that appeared during the hours of daylight.

And by chance, both witness accounts came to light through the conduit of a regional newspaper, as in the accounts supplied separately to the Derby Telegraph.

The first report was posted to their online forum on February 4th, 2015 from a motorist named as  Lisa Fisher, who recounted her experience:

"I was driving towards Bretby Hall in Bretby on Monday around 2pm. There is a lane just off Ashby Road that leads up to the hall. As I turned into the lane I could see a young woman with black hair standing with a bike by the side of the road, about a 100m ahead. As I got closer I could see she was dressed in old fashioned clothes (floral dress and hair net). The bike had a wicker basket and also looked old. She watched me as I passed her. As I got further down the lane I happened to glance in the rear view mirror and saw the woman had disappeared."

Another report was made to the newspaper on February 26th by a motorist named as Janet Fielding, whose account bears striking similarities to the first:

"I was driving down Mount Road (not far from Bretby Hall) towards the Planters garden centre. It was around 4pm and raining quite badly. As I was driving down the road I passed a lady walking by the side of the road.

"She was quite tall and was wearing a floral dress and had her hair in a net. She looked in her early 30s and had black hair. The clothes looked very old fashioned and overall she looked out of place.

"When I passed her she turned her head and stared at me blankly. It was quite unnerving and creepy when she stared at me. I thought nothing of it and continued driving."

A Lady in a Floral Dress - similar to that seen by the witnesses

Bretby Hall was formerly the family seat of the Earl of Chesterfield.

Following the death of the 7th earl in 1871, the Estate passed to his widowed mother, Anne Elizabeth, Dowager Countess of Chesterfield (1802–1885), whose good friend, Benjamin Disraeli, paid frequent visits to Bretby.

On the death of the Countess, her estates devolved upon Lord Porchester, the eldest son of her daughter, Evelyn (died 1875), who married in 1861 the 4th Earl of Carnarvon.

The 5th Earl of Carnarvon, the famous egyptologist for whom Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun, commenced breaking up the Bretby estate during World War I. They never lived at Bretby, preferring their home at Highclere Castle, near Newbury, Berkshire. They did make regular visits, however, particularly for shooting.

The main estate was sold to Mr J D Wragg, the Swadlincote industrialist. The proceeds helped to fund the Carter’s search for the tomb of Tutankhamen in Egypt in the early 1920s.

In 1926, the Hall was sold to Derbyshire County Council and was run as an orthopaedic hospital until the 1990s when it was sold to a private developer, who has converted it into luxury apartments and suites.

Bretby Hall has little to say for itself with regard to hauntings, and the only account is that
of the ghost of the dying Lady Chesterfield who purportedly haunts the great bedroom.

She always appears to a bride who occupies the state chamber, but not necessarily to the bridegroom. A rather grand account of her haunting is given thus. `The unhappy lady partakes of the cup, then looks up with eyes full of agony and sorrow, but yet, expressing faith and innocence, utters a loud groan, falls back and dies.`

But no accounts as described by the two witnesses fits any known haunted tales, but it is worthy to mention that on both occasions that the witnesses were women.

So, who was this lady? Her clothing description fits any period from the 1920`s to the early 1950`s, and of course, it could be argued that the clothing description although classic, has still been worn in more contemporary times. However, the lady was seen twice wearing a simple floral dress in late winter without the comfort of warmer clothing.

Hopefully perhaps more witnesses will step forward to this roadside haunting, and hopefully perhaps one day her real identity in life will be known.

A very interesting tale.
