HAUNTED WELSH PUB ATTRACTS PARANORMAL INVESTIGATORS

Black Lion, near the hamlet of Babell, Flintshire.
THE landlady of an ancient Welsh pub is so convinced it’s haunted, she’s asked paranormal investigators to shed light on the weird happenings.

There have been tales for decades about supernatural events at the Black Lion, near the hamlet of Babell, Flintshire.

But since Jane Forkings-Russell took it over five years ago, the ghosts appear to have got even friskier.

She says she was washing glasses one night when something approached from behind her and pressed a couple of fingers into her back.

She thought it was one of her staff playing a prank, but when she turned round she saw that she was alone in the pub.

And the resident ghosts aren’t too shy to perform before an audience at the isolated 13th-century building, which is surrounded by fields.

“They like playing with the music,” said Jane. “I’ve got a digital player in the bar. The volume is usually between nine and 12.

“I can be standing there, talking to a customer, and the music starts going up. The dial goes up and up to 34.

“People have said it’s an electrical surge, but it happens so often.”

One local theory is that the pub is haunted by the ghost of a landlady from centuries ago who suffered some kind of misfortune.

“A couple of the ladies who left recently were convinced it was a lady in white,” said Jane.

She said the spooky happenings increase after anything changes at the pub, for example when a room has been redecorated or furniture rearranged.

The paranormal investigators will spend an entire night in the pub. Zoë Montgomery, who works and lives at the Black Lion, plans to stay at her mother’s house that night, but Jane said she had never felt scared because the ghosts weren’t nasty.

Zoë said she once saw a metal whisky advert fall from its place on an interior wall – moving forward a few inches before dropping.

Another time she was mopping the back corridor, alone in the building, when a brass toasting fork fell to the ground. “It’s nailed onto the mantelpiece. It can’t slide off the nail.”

Some of the earlier reports of supernatural activity have become local legends.

In the 1970s, two policemen were dispatched to the Black Lion after the landlord and his wife reported hearing someone knocking at the front door asking for help, in a distressed voice.

At the same time they could see from their upstairs window that there was nobody at the door.

Some drinkers also claim to have seen a replica medieval soldier’s helmet, another of the pub’s decorations, moving around as if worn by a ghost.

There is also an old story that a Roman legion occasionally marches through the Black Lion’s cellar.

“Some of the locals think the pub is on part of a missing Roman road from Chester,” said Jane.

  1. About the soldier's medieval helmet and the Roman legion : it is known in spiritual communions that lot of soldiers from wars in the past, are still on duty. That because many people who are killed or died very suddenly don't even realize that they are death and so they just go on with what they where doing that moment. So many soldier are still going on to fight their war.
